There is very little you can control in this world. There are over 8 billion people in this world, and you cannot be accountable for everyone's actions but your own. Beyond that, if you're faced with a situation, even if you do everything right or damn near perfect, you may still not get the result you're looking for. Whether it's relationships, projects, or jobs, the only things you can control are your Preparation, Performance, and Reaction to a situation. All the rest, other people's behavior, math, physics, economics, statistics, and luck, is stuff you have no control over. So all you can hope is that the odds are in your favor.
